Family History: The Races

Last week my Nanny came to visit for a few days- it was nice to have her here & watch her play with my boys. We did a lot of driving & she told me lots o

f old family stories....but she talked a lot about when she and my grandfather {my Deedledee} used to go to the races. He raced 2 to 3 times a week & she worked at an insurance company. He liked her to wear her lucky suit- a black jacket & black pants...which she isn't wearing in the photo below...he must have lost that night.

My grandmother, Millie, is on the right. When I go to my hometown people usually stop me and ask if I'm Millie's grand-daughter. The resemblance is a bit uncanny.

Deedledee gave up racing when his oldest child, my Aunt Peg {or Auntie Ho-Ho as Marcus calls her!} was born. He thought it was too dangerous for a father to be racing. But racing remains strong in my family. I have vivid memories of listening to the races on the radio with Deedledee and my dad. Watching races on tv, going to races as a little kid, etc. I'm not ashamed to say that I know most Nascar drivers...and to be totally honest, on race Sundays if I'm home, I'll have the race on t.v....I find it calming to hear the cars go round & round.

This photo was shortly after Deedledee stopped racing. Aunt Peg is 2, my dad is 6 month- this was Easter, 1955.....Can you believe how much my Henry looks like my dad? {Minus the big dimple in his chin!}

I love that my Deedledee's passion for racing has trickled down to all of us. When he passed away my Nanny glanced at the clock at his bedside. It was 1:51 P.M.

Papa took Sparky snow-mobiling today....so it was just Mommy & Henry for a few peaceful hours...I was able to get a little bit of work done...but ended up spending most of the time either nursing or rocking a little someone...slowly getting back into a groove!

Welcome Home Baby Henry

We are happy to announce that our sweet Henry Paul was born on February 15th at 8:10 in the morning....he weighed in at a whopping 8 lbs. 9 oz and was 20.1 long.....amazing since I went into pre-term labor at 28 weeks....he obviously was not affected!

After some fairly major set-backs from the surgery {I won't get into the details on this blog} I am finally starting to slowly feel better- better enough to break out the camera! Poor baby boy has been loved, but it hasn't been very well documented.....now that I'm {almost} back up to my normal energy levels he is going to get used to the camera pretty fast!

Big brother Marcus got a new Woody {Toy Story anyone?} cowboy hat from baby brother Henry....not sure which one he loves more at this point...and yes, those are the same boots that he has been wearing for the past year....size 10- so we'll have them for a long time to come!
Henry seems to understand that Mommy has been through a lot- and is the most content, sweetest baby ever....he rarely cries & takes nice long 5 hour naps at night! xoxo

NYC: 2010

This past weekend we made the trek to NYC to visit Andy & Maria and see their fabulous new apartment in Queens. On Saturday we took Marcus to the Sesame Street Theme Park in Pennsylvania {about an hour and half drive from the city}

It is pretty evident that someone was having a good time on the Merry-Go-Round with his Uncle Andy!

Sparky and the Pumpkin Patch Express

Today I had to meet some clients in Jackson- and it just so happened that the Cog Scenic RR was hosting their Pumpkin Patch Express...costumes encouraged. Luckily- the dragon {aka Dinosaur} top still fit from last year- as I haven't yet finished 2010's Halloween costume. It was incredibly cold and windy today- so the dinosaur top kept him nice and warm....

"Stop, Choo-Choo Train!" putting his hand out like a policeman...and yes, it stopped to his amazement.

The sheer wonder of meeting the conductor.....

There were so few people on the train on a Friday that we got to put our shoes and "boom-booms" up.

The train stopped in Glen at the Cider House and all the little ones got to pick a pumpkin- Auntie Sara would be proud of how perfect this one was!

New Baby = New Bedrooms

And since we now know for certain that we are having boy #2- Daddy has been hard at work getting Marcus' big-boy-bedroom done....so he can move in and get settled before Henry arrives.

Taken from what will be bedroom #2- they will have adjoining bedrooms....and most likely sleep in one and play in the other....Sparky helping Daddy {he even has his tool belt on}

It looks like we {Nate} has a lot to do- but I think the end is in site!

4 Years

Yesterday we celebrated our 4 year anniversary...and of course it was pouring rain! Mother Nature never seems to forget.....

We went for a nice Japanese dinner in West Lebanon at Koto's & Nate surprised me with some beautiful flowers from Emily at E.H. Floral {she did my bridal bouquet}...

It's crazy to think that in just four years we have built a house, had Marcus, have another baby on the way, I am able to sustain my business without part-work, moved into my photo studio, Nate has completed 5 triathlons...I'm sure there is something huge that I missed- but I was up all night with a 2 year old with a tummy-ache....Oh well!

Labor Day Weekend 2010

Wow! It's been a terribly long time since I've added anything to this blog {or my Rodeo & Co. blog either}...I finally have high-speed satellite internet again in Landaff {after I broke up with HughesNet for a while, I realized I really can't function 100% without them...boo!}

This past Labor Day weekend Andy & Maria came to visit from NYC {I had to shoot a wedding on Saturday, of course, but the rest of the time was relaxing!} Sunday the heat finally cooled off a bit & it was a perfect Fall day in New Hampshire. Grampa Pete & Regina came up for Sunday dinner and brought along their new puppy Hugo {who, coincidentally is as old as I am pregnant- 16 weeks!}

The past few weeks we've been lucky to have a super early Spring...as I type this we have been outside all morning and it's 74 degrees out!

Mother's Helper

A while ago Abby gave me this sweet book for Marcus c. 1982- it was Nicky's, then Zack's, and now is being read multiple times a day by you-know-who....The book is different than most of the zilllions of others we have at home; it doesn't have any words. So we just make up a little story about the little boy helping his mama. Well, Sparky is at the age apparently where he likes to imitate everything he sees. So, much to our delight & amazement he likes to do everything he sees in the book {too bad there wasn't a page on napping and toilet training! ha}

He has a baby doll that he likes to bring his blankie to & tries to give her some of milk from his sippy...I just haven't documented that yet!

Marcus LOVES LOVES LOVES doing the dishes...Kitty Scout does too!

We build forts with blankets to read books and play with all the animals...

We scribble... and draw pretty things....

And of course we help out with Oscar....In fact, these days Marcus can open and close the door to let Oscar in and out....he really is our little helper!

Last week we finally got a chance to make an outing as a little family & went to Hanover for the day...

After going downtown and into some of the shoppes on Main Street- we had a late lunch at Yama Japanese & Korean Restaurant. One word: FABULOUS. The Hamilton's have a new favorite place to eat! Jen- when you and Ed finally return from overseas I'll have to bring you there- I'm sure you'll be missing the Korean cuisine!

P.S. I didn't take a picture- but I had a breve (latte with half&half) at the Dirt Cowboy Cafe that was so amazing that I actually dreamt about it that night....and I'm not even joking! Who dreams about lattes? Apprently I do!

Gram's 75th Grange Award

Gram was presented her 75th year recognition certificate by the State Grange Master; this award has only been presented 3006 times in the entire history of the Grange. Gram joined when she was 15 and has been active ever since!

After a long break for revamps & a crazy busy summer- my family/personal blog is finally back up and running- thank you Crissy for all your hard work!

Last weekend I went to Saratoga Springs to shoot Sue & Chris's Jaynesapalooza wedding....

Something I never really thought about- Saratoga Springs is named that because there are lots of natural Springs everywhere in the area...this was was in historical Congress Park.

The carousel was recently restored & we went there to do some super fun bridal party shots.

I also went to the Salsa & Spice Co. on Broadway....and brought home some delicious Autumn Apple Salsa & Photo Finish hot sauce (for Nate).

We took the kayak to the end of the road and paddled around Chandler Pond for a little while- taking turns. Marcus (slathered in sun-screen lotion, I should add) enjoyed hanging out in his stroller.

I am incredibly saddened to report that Killer passed away yesterday morning, unexpectedly. He was a huge part of our lives growing up in Bath- we spent countless hours boating, sledding, and hanging out. He was the Bath Fire Chief when we moved to New Hampshire- and he and Abby (and Zack) have been a part of our extended family since then. He moved to the Cape a few years ago, and we hadn't seen much of him lately. However, just a few weeks ago he had reconnected with everyone via FaceBook....I feel an empty space in my heart, but am comforted by the fact that he is now in Heaven with his son, Nicky.
We love you Killer!

I have officially announced that I will be running as a write-in candidate for Landaff Town Moderator. The key functions for Town Moderator include: "presiding over town meetings, regulating the business thereof, deciding questions of order, making public declarations of each vote passed, and prescribing rules of proceeding which may be altered by the town as need."
Dad is running for a Planning Board seat- so we'll see on March 10th how the McGoverns fare!

ick- the glider before (when i purchased it, i had planned on recovering it- but then i was about 8 months preggers and it wasn't so important anymore)....but the stripes were icky and it was the floor model- so it really had to be done....

my precise sewing plans included tracing the pillow body with chalk (must be the former police officer in me).....

my adorable sewing machine.....tucked away in the corner, she came out to play

and presto-chango...the glider and footrest now have a happy brown cover- and despite the fact that I used chalk to make the pattern, it really came out nice!

Office Redo- Bear Style

So, I was totally inspired today by this blog post over at Decor8 :

and it got me talking to Stacey (lucas pucas) for ideas on what to do to totally revamp my office...and i mean totally revamp here! and she mentioned that her favorite book was The Berenstain Bears and the Messy Room...now seriously, how could we have been friends since the 7th grade and NOT realize this??? So I just had to share some of my favorite pages...and the end were Brother Bear is sitting in his little chair, reading, eating cookies and milk...just so sweet.

25 Random Things

This silly thing was from FaceBook- and since I went through all the the trouble of writing it, I figured I'd post it here too. Now, make your own list!
1. I drink 4-5 cups of coffee a day. Cream and sugar. For 4 long months of my pregnancy even the smell of it made me VERY ill.
2. I adore Martha Stewart, I think she makes the world a better place. Oprah too.
3. Orla Kiely is my favorite designer. I'm not so patiently for her Target line to be released (was SUPPOSED to be yesterday). If any of my friends at GH happen to come across her gray woolen bag at a sale- please grab it...I'll be your best friend!
4. I love to ski. But haven't been in 2 years...preggers last year, and this year have the baby...and need to get bindings put on my new skis I won 3 seasons ago! Ak. My husband refuses to ski. Says he "fell down too much" the one time he tried as a kid. I remind him I broke my eye socket learning how to ski...and I went on to race in High School (but I was a crappy racer- I blame the junky skies!)
4. Last Thursday I witnessed my dog, Oscar, get hit by a truck. The scene keeps playing over and over in my mind- even though he is, for the most part, okay.
5. Each time my baby Marcus learns to do something new I'm at the same time insanely proud and a crushed that he is growing up so fast.
6. I plan on starting to jump my little pony, Greta, this Spring. Giddyup!
7. Last year my veggie garden was wildly succcessful- much to everyone's surprise...supposedly I had chosen the "wrong" spot.
8. I talked to my mom and my sister. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. And I see nothing wrong with this.
9. I love to bake and cook & do all my domestic goddess things...and sometimes wonder why exactly I have degrees in Criminal Justice, Liberal Studies, and am 3 classes short for one in Fire Science?
10. I rearrange furniture and organize all my "stuff" as a form as procrastination- Nate thinks I do this to annoy him, but really, I think it started about age 6 or 7.
11. Marcus wears cloth diapers, about half the time. They are a pain, but I feel a lot better when he does.
12. I consider my Aunt Peg & Abby to be my 2nd moms, they helped make me the person that I am today.
13. I am very competitive & I am sad that the women's softball league doesn't play anymore around here. If I was any good at soccer I'd sign up for that league.
14. I love being a photographer, there is nothing better than capturing happy memories (as opposed to homes in cellars and burnt out dryers).
15. Pocket doors make me claustorphobic (spelling, I know). However, I have no problems wearing full turnout gear, an airpack, and crawling around in confined spaces.
16. I don't mind doing dishes. I love my retro kitchen so much, that I just want it to be sparkely and perfect all the time.
17. I wish Newport, NH was about an hour closer- I'd be at Elise's 3 times a week- easy!
18. I got my love of baking, quilting, and homemaking from my Gramma Brown.
19. I got my love of popcorn and organization from my Grampa Brown. His mother, Bessie, was a photographer....
20. From my Deedledee I got a deep love for animals, Irish music, Nascar, and town pride.
21. My Nanny (dad's mom) is a part-time police officer, avid reader, and she collects everything...so I got that from her!
22. Marcus doesn't go to day-care. He goes 3 miles down the road and spends 2 days a week with his Nana & Pa.
23. Peonies & Hydrangeas. Country Music. Rap. Folk. Corned Beef & Cabbage.
24. My pregnancy was a bit of nightmare, but I can't wait to have baby #2!
25. I married the very best guy in the world AND he builds me furniture.

A New Family Favorite: Jeweled Lace Cookies

Gram made these cookies last week for Mom's birthday celebration (among loads of other goodies)....the recipe comes via my cousin Emily's School's Annual Cookie Swap- from someone name Leslie Kelly. I don't know who Ms. Kelly is- but her cookies rock!

Jeweled Lace Cookies
1/3 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. corn syrup
4 T. butter
1/2 c. rolled oats
1/4 c. flour
1 pinch salt
1/3 cup dried cranberries
1/2 c. shelled pistachios, chopped

1. position rack in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and preheat to 325. Grease 2 cookie sheets. In med saucepan, stir together the brown sugar, corn syrup, and butter over med. heat until smooth and bubbling, about 4 mins. Remove from heat. In a bowl whisk flour, oats, and salt. Add to sugar mixture. Stir. Add cranberries and pistachios.

2. Drop VERY small amounts (were talking nickle size here) about 3 inches apart on pans. Bake until bubbly and a shade darker, 9-10 minutes. Let cool 1 minute before quickly tranferring each cookie to a rack using a metal spatula. Cool completely.

* Sara made these minus the nuts for Andy & recommends adding more oats.
** I'm telling myself these are healthy since there is only 1/2 stick of butters and cranberries. Andything with cranberries is automatically healthy, right?

On a seperate note, here is Oscar this morning, begging for cookies. You wouldn't know it by looking at this picture- but yesterday early morning he was hit by a big truck going about 35 mph....the worst part was that I was calling him & he was actually being good - running home, when the accident occured. I was sure that he wasn't going to make it, and after a lot of drama and rushing to the vets...he is fine. Banged up a lot, gimpy, sore, bumps and bruises, drugged up, but he will be fine in about a week or so. So fine, in fact, that he was begging for cookies & catching me at weak moment, he got one. It was a horrible morning that I hope to never have to repeat again...my poor baby Oscar Boo!

Marcus: 1/2 Year

Marcus turned a half-year yesterday....which seems hard to believe. But then, I look out the window and see a foot of fluffy, white snow and remember how warm it was when we brought him home from Littleton Hospital...and the rain. I'm pretty certain it rained for the first 27 days of his life. He can roll over, and over, and over. Scoot across the floor on his bum. He loves Oscar..and squeals with glee when he sees him. He adores Sophia, and will stop drinking a bottle in the middle of the night in vain attempts to pet her. He loves his daddy, and his mommy...and wants his mommy and only his mommy when his stubborn bottom tooth is trying to makes it's way into the world. He loved his ducky pacifier, but has discarded it in favor of a soft Tigger. He loves his teddy bears in his crib. He is happy in his crib; even in the mornings, he'll be content for over an hour talking to his animals and his toes. He likes to chew on his toes- especially in the bathtub. He is the BEST little eater...and will get angry if I don't shovel the food in quick enough. He prefers Nana's applesauce with rice-flakes, but also like green beans, peaches, pears, and carrots...he isn't so sure about prunes and winter squash. He likes to be in his bouncy seat, but hasn't quiet figured out how to turn around in it. He likes his vibrating chair and his swing when he's tired. He enjoys The Colbert Report & Jon Stewart...and laughs out-loud (seriously). He has the most adorable little belly-laugh. And the biggest little belly. He loves to snuggle and give hugs. He trys to give open mouthed sloppy kisses.....he is the best little Mocus-Pocus in the whole wide world.

The entire thing only cost me a bucket of paint (same blue as my retro kitchen), a polka dot comforter cover from the Garnet Hill Outlet store (that I chopped up into a billion different things), 2 picture frames from Walmart, 4 Cynthia Rowley baskets from Target on clearence, one poster sized print from Kodak, the little coat rack I ordered from Garnet Hill, and the flash cards from PaperSource.....bringing my grand total to: $133.00 (The crib was from a friend & the dresser was Nate's when he was little....most everything else were gifts from the baby showers!

Christmas morning in Mom's kitchen- we had been up since 5 am...so the coffee was sorely needed.

Christmas was pretty much a whirlwind affair: Nate was working day shift- so we went to Mom & Dad's first thing...but not before I got to rummage through 6 bags of garbage in search for $75 worth of accidentally tossed gift cards. Found.

Then Dad & I & Marcus went to Littleton, MA to see all the McGovern crew. After visiting and eating lots of food- Dad dropped me off at Jackie's- where I ate another delicious meal and opened even more presents. Maria's parents & sister Nydia were visiting from Bulgaria- so it was nice to meet them & made Christmas a little more special. On the 26th we spent the day at Gramma Browns. I didn't bring my camera. I knew Elise & Bev would document the day. Dad & I taught Eben how to play cribbage. We ate waffles, dessert, and then a pork meal. Gram finally figured that if she feeds us ALL day, we will stay ALL day.

The November 2008 Pretty Little Things Club gift arrived last week....and the instructions were simple: take these to a photobooth and take some pictures.

Well, in Northern New Hampshire, we are lacking in the cool photo booth department...so I used PhotoBooth via my beloved Mac.

Marcus didn't seem to mind his mustache...in fact, he thought it was funny.

I'll try to remember to bring them to NYC...where I'm sure we are bound to find a super-cool photo booth....which would cute if the 3 of us crammed into one, eh?

Last month's PLT was a neat vintage-inspired set of shadow animal cards...which will be very fun to use in a few years with a certain little someone!

Some recent things I'm thankful for: the wooden pull-toys I found at the Craft Fair (I attempted to fix the eyes), pecan pie made especially for dad, a new puppy for marcus from the craft fair, sara's yarn turkey hiding with my mini-pumpkins, a new vase with my hydrengreas in the kitchen, my new cookie jar (from my new friend, potter Beth Griffin), and my fabulous new bag compliments of Miss Bernie.

Other things....the newly installed floor registers helping to keep our house toasty, my new walk-in closet that I am finally using, installing the upstairs french doors, being SO close to moving upstairs, our up-coming mini-jaunt to NYC in December, Mocus being the happiest baby in the world, Gram's apple pie, Gossip Girl (my biggest guilty pleasure these days...)

Some people are starting to say that Michelle O. will be the next Jackie O. I think Mrs. Obama will make an excellent First Lady, but no one can ever fill the shoes of Jackie!
I've been slightly obsessed with Jackie since High School, and even designed the top half of my wedding gown to mirror her's.
This is an excellent book- Portrait of a Rider- it covers mostly Jackie's love for all things horses. I've been told many times, by lots of random people, that I look like her...which is really nice, but come on people, in my dreams!
I'm bidding on this on e-bay....to add to my collection.

I'm 10 days late in posting these....thanks to our ridiculously over-priced satellite internet barely working...but I did take these on his 4 month birthday- I barely remembered! Oooops....

Construction Update: My clothes are finally hung in the walk-in closet! Yessssssssssss....the nursery is SO close- just needs a couple more pieces of trim & a light installed. The bedroom carpet is in & we are just waiting on the trim for this too. Maybe after the next days off???? The heat will be turned on up there TONIGHT....

Early this morning, and I mean early (say 4:30) Marcus was especially fussy and cranky due to his 4 month shots yesterday. In an effort to quiet him down we were working on his sign language...and after a few minutes of concentrating and moving his fingers all around he signed "I Love You" not once, but twice with his left hand! We have been working on this for a while- but I really can't believe that at 4 months he was able to do this- I'm not sure if he knows the meaning of it, but he was able to copy my hand- which is impressive either way!

Gratitude Journal

In the November issue of Real Simple they have an artcile entitled "Why Gratitude Is Good for You." And, for whatever reason, it is one of the few articles that isn't available on-line. Boo. Otherwise I'd link it for you. But the basic concept is it to keep a gratitude journal for a month (or more!)...just jot down a few things each day that you are grateful for. Perfect for the month of November- but also, just a good thing all around.
I' figured I'd start mine here, but then keep it going in one of my many assorted journals ;0)

1. The amazingly perfect weather this past week & not having to turn on the heat or burn any of the precious wood!
2. That Marcus slept for 3 solid nights in a row, waking up at 5 & 6!
3. That I sold a piece of artwork at the gallery opening last night.
4. The carpet was installed this week in the master bedroom.
5. Nate and I installed the cork flooring in the nursery!
6. That I have such a handsome, handy husband that is sooooooo close to finishing the upstairs project!

So, I stumbled across this really neat idea for a growth chart on Etsy a while back- Ms. Natalie's Growth chart. You can find it here.
Sadly, it is sold out & a bit on the pricey side besides. So I'm thinking I might have to make Marcus one in a few months. But, when do you start measuring kids? When they can stand? Hmmmm...
The best thing about this chart is that you can pack it up and tuck it away after you fill out the tag and pin it to the ribbon...which makes me kinda sad. We used to mark ourselves at the top of the basement stairs on New Estate Road. And then at the camp inside my bedroom closet- we even marked friends- I'm certain Chloe, Heather Legenza & Kristen Harrington were measured inaccurately by me at some point.

5. Finish the Book on Blurb I started for Marcus

6. Spend more time working Miss Greta

7. Visit Gram more often...maybe this week?

George Stubbs

I'm seriously thinking of getting a reprint of this George Stubb's piece- "Bay Horse and White Dog." And also this George Rowlandson hunting painting, titled "Halted." Mom & I are redoing my dining room and I'm getting rid of a lot of the clutter, and have moved my wedding quilt into the hallway. This leaves a GIANT, blank, white wall for me to start fresh with. I found these on http://www.artprints.com/ and they are certainly affordable. I would just need to find appropriate frames and beg my sister to pretty please cut me some mats!

Marcus spent some quality time on Greta Francis, who was all worn out after Mommy's lesson. On a side note, she she trotted PERFECTLY the very first time I asked. But she did act like a stubborn little pony towards the end of the lesson, apparently she was tired from all that work!

Nate's Aunt Maureen knit Marcus this adorable blue and brown striped sweater...as you can see he has some room to grow before it will fit. I didn't have the heart to pack it away until then, and Jackie had heard of someone that took a picture each month of a special outfit until a baby grew into it. I thought that sounded like something I could handle- and it will be cool to someday look back and watch him grow into his special sweater. Thank you Maureen!
Auntie Sara got M this little sock pony & his mommy LOVES it! Also- just and FYI for those who care, and this is totally off subject, but we are using the cloth diapers (BumGenius) during the daytime when we are home (they aren't the best for overnight at this point- we have lots of leaks & when he is at Nana & Pa's we just use regular Pampers).
Ummm....he looks a little scared here! But, I swear, he was happy :0)
And the Jungle Gym thing, I hate the way it looks in my living room, but an adorable 3 month old loves it & has just figured out how to make the kitty play some songs. I got a little weepy last night packing up some clothes that don't fit anymore & listening to him make the music play- he couldn't do that last week!
Well, someone is asleep in my arms as I type- so we are off to bed! xoxo

Giddy Up!

Yesterday I finally got to ride my little Greta- this was her 4th time ever being ridden...and she did amazingly well. She only spooked a little once, and I was able to bring her back within seconds. We only walked and worked on turns and small circles...next week we will venture into trotting....and those that know what they are talking about think that we'll be able to jump in the 4H show next year!
